I joined Amref in 2022, where I received an incredible introduction to addressing public health challenges, including emerging threats like the COVID-19 pandemic. Amref is dedicated to achieving sustainable health improvements across Africa by ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare serviceswith a Vision of lasting health change in Africa. This involves investing in having a fit-for- purpose health workforce, addressing social determinants, and promoting community-led people- centered health services aimed at achieving universal health coverage. The values of Ubuntu, Integrity, and Quality are central to Amref's culture. Team work and strong leadership creates a conducive and supportive working atmosphere. Our staff is devoted to serving the community and fostering a healthy population, and I’m proud to be part of a team that is driving change and making a difference.
When I joined Amref Health Africa as an Human Resource Assistant, I never imagined how pivotal this role would be in shaping my career. Today, as a Talent Acquisition and Organizational Development Officer, I’m proud to be part of an African-based organization advancing health across the continent while prioritizing the growth, well-being, and empowerment of its people and culture. Amref’s Health Africa commitment to diversity and collaboration ensures employees feel valued and supported—key to individual and organizational success.
What sets Amref Health Africa apart, especially from many NGOs, is how its People and Culture function has evolved. While many organizations have limited HR roles, Amref Health Africa has diversified its practices, with both administrative and talent functions strategically led by HR Business Partners (HRBPs). This shift has allowed me to take on broader responsibilities, contributing to a more dynamic and strategic People and Culture environment. Amref Health Africa is more than a workplace; it’s a space where HR practices align with purpose and impact. I’m excited to continue contributing to this transformative journey.
Working at Amref Health Africa, very fast growing and biggest health international organization in Africa, is a great opportunity for me. It is a very result-oriented and people-oriented organization. With a leadership that lives the vision it has set to bring lasting health change to the society. Amref is an organization which really and practically believe the vision of lasting health change in Africa and the successful achievement of the long-term aspirational strategic plan by 2030 will be achieved through engaging all staffs. In particular, its organizational culture change journey to create enabling work environment and people and employee centered development approach makes it unique from other organizations.
The Amref Germany office is the latest addition to the Amref family and was only opened in August 2024. I joined as one of the first employees. I applied for the position because issues around health, especially sexual and reproductive health and rights, women’s rights and human rights have been a key interest in my work with other international and national NGOs in the past. I was also looking for an organisation that would drive forward locally-led development, localising aid and decolonialisation. I very much like trying new things and am always up for a new challenge. Being part of setting up this office sounded like a great opportunity to learn and to contribute. Plus, I am able to work from home, which gives me good flexibility to engage in my community. I am honored and privileged to be part of Amref. Amref is a great employer but also a challenging one – which is good. So if health is your mission and you’re happy to work in a diverse and welcoming community – don’t hesitate to apply for a position at Amref.
I joined Amref on 6th November 2009 and that's now over 15 years down the line. I'm very much excited about working for Amref because of its excellent reputation in health industry. I believe that working for a well-respected and established organization has given me access to opportunities and experiences that has helped me grow my career to become who I am today. My advice to someone who would like to join Amref to read the company's website, and social media accounts to learn about our work culture, values, and projects.
Amref supports its employees through a collaborative and inclusive work environment, where open communication and mutual respect are encouraged. The leadership style is supportive and empowering, focusing on mentorship, professional development, and fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility within teams. This approach has thus far made me feel valued and motivated to contribute to the organization's impactful work. My role requires me to interact and work well with others, this has been possible due to the teamwork spirit where the technical teams and support unit staffs embrace the culture of teamwork believing that ‘teamwork makes the dream work’. I would recommend Amref to others for its inspiring mission, collaborative work culture, and dedication to making a meaningful impact in global health, offering both personal and professional growth opportunities.
At Amref, employees are highly supported, starting with a joint development of key performance indicators, listing support required to attain the indicators and a friendly appraisal system. The investment in staff improvement platforms for career growth is also a plausible and highly appreciated support system for the staff. The organization has established various team cohesion building activities such as joint aerobics, retreats and reflection sessions. In my medical and public health career spanning 19 years, Amref is the fifth organization I have joined to serve. It is only in Amref where I have served for more than 4 years, and are currently on my ninth year. Apart from two other organizations, it is also at Amref where I have been considered to take on higher positional roles. This is testament to Amref’s impressive shared vision, impactful approaches such as stakeholder/community co-creation and engagements, and an expansive accommodative progressive working environment. I would recommend to others Amref as employer of choice on any given opportunity.
My journey with the organization began in 2018 as an intern, and over the years, I have had the privilege of growing both professionally and personally. Amref thrives on teamwork and strong leadership. The leadership is approachable and supportive, encouraging innovation and collective problem solving. Employees are empowered to take initiative, and teamwork is at the core of delivering impactful health solutions across Uganda and beyond. I would highly recommend Amref Health Africa to anyone looking for a dynamic and purpose-driven work environment. It is an organization that not only prioritizes professional development but also ensures that every employee contributes meaningfully to the mission of creating lasting health change in Africa.
Having been with Amref for seven years, my journey has been transformative. Amref, as Africa’s largest health NGO, provides a unique platform to develop solutions by Africans for Africans, ensuring long-term impact and lasting health change. One of my proudest moments was leading efforts in Amuru District, where we empowered young women and youth to advocate for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Through the Participatory Learning and Action Cycle (PLAC) methodology in which we conducted “Moonlight” outreaches, we improved access to SRHR services, resulting in a 10% reduction in teenage pregnancies. Looking to join Amref? My advice – be purpose-driven, open to learning, engaging, and solution-oriented because creating a lasting health change in Africa requires commitment, collaboration, and innovation.
